Bekal Beach Print E-mail

Bekal beach with its pristine waters and white, sandy shores is situated at a distance of about 16 km from Kasaragod in north Kerala. This undisturbed beach is a tribute to nature in all its finest splendor and beauty. The circular Bekal fort is the crowning glory to this tiny paradise on earth. This 17th century fort evokes feelings of awe as it stands the test of time and still maintains its majesty.

Bekal beach is a shallow stretch of water that’s clear, emerald blue and mesmerizing. The Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC) has worked hard to keep this beach eco-friendly. If you’re done with the sun-bathing and the swimming, you can go for a stroll in the walkway that meanders along the shoreline offering a fantastic view of the Bekal fort. There is a small children’s park for your kids to jump around and have some fun.

The best part of the beach is however its unspoiled charm, a haven that’s a far cry from the other over-crowded beaches of Kerala. The beach is illuminated in the night and the atmosphere is almost magical after sunset. Its a great place to rekindle the romance in your life. You must pay a nominal fee for entry into the beach area. A small parking fee is also collected for vehicles.

History of Bekal:
The Bekal fort was built by Sivappa Naik of Ikkeri dynasty. This beautiful 17th Century (1645-1660) was under the control of Kolathiri Rajas and later the Vijayanagar Empire. Tipu Sultan also held the fort under his rule and later the British East India Company occupied the fort. The Bekal fort occupies 35 acres of land and is a visual marvel. The fort is maintained by the Bekal Resorts Development Corporation. The Board plans to convert Bekal and its surrounding backwaters into an eco-friendly tourist destination.
