Bhatkal Beach Print E-mail

Bhatkal Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches of Coastal Karnataka. Located on the banks of the Arabian Sea, the high hills of Western Ghats are on its other side. The greenery along the coast only adds to the exquisite beauty of the place. The natural beauty, coupled with miles of sand makes it an ideal spot for a holiday.

The Bhatkal beach is located 16 km from Bhatkal and 126 km from Karwar and is also used as a fishing port by fishermen. They essentially ply small boats on the seas in search of prey. If you are interested in sun bathing, you can indulge in that too, on this beach.

Bhatkal Beach also offers a lot of options in terms of water sports, be it water skiing or parasailing. If you are the outdoorsy type, you can play beach volleyball. All said and done, there is one activity you can enjoy here: collecting sea shells on the beaches of Bhatkal. The coconuts here are some of the sweetest nuts available on the coast line. If you are a compulsive tourist shopper, you can find lots of curios in the shops on the beach.

It goes without saying that you’ll certainly enjoy the Mangalorean and Kannada Cuisines.

History of Bhatkal Beach:
The Bhatkal Beach is actually part of the temple town of Murudeshwar, with a temple sitting on top of a hillock by the shore. The hillock, on which the temple stands, is surrounded by the sea on three sides and is called Kanduka Giri. There is also a huge fort here, supposedly built by Tipu Sultan. Bhatkal, incidentally, was the main port during the days of the Vijaynagar Empire in the 16th century. There are also two interesting temples; one called the Jain Chandranatha Basadi and the other, a Vijaynagar Temple with animal carvings.

Special attractions in and around Bhatkal Beach:

  • The temple of Murudeshwar.
  • The Fort reortedly constructed by Tipu Sultan
  • The Vijaynagar temple.
  • The Chandranatha Basadi.
