As per the thirtheenth century European traveller, Marco Polo, Kizhunna Ezhara Beach has been an active and a great source of spices and has even been regarded as a 'great emporium of spice trade'. The history of the place and nearby region roots back to the reign of the Kolathiris. During those centuries, the region gained a lot of political momentum and some buildings were also constructed. The St Angelo Fort, in Kannur was also built during that period, in 1505. Since then, a lot of different rulers have been changing hands, ranging from the Dutch to the Muslims.
