Kovalam is a scenic beach town that is popularly known as the ‘paradise of South India’, Kovalam has three famous crescent-shaped beaches that are thronged by tourists from all parts of the world. The large lighthouse beach is the southern-most beach and you get to see an amazing view of the nearby Vizhinjam mosque. The northern Samudra beach is a relatively calm one with fishermen going about their business in a slow pace. Mornings in the Hawah beach are quiet busy with the fishermen setting out to the sea, while tourists enjoy the medley of rock and calm waters all through the day. The emerald blue waters invite you for a nice swim, while the pleasant weather would entice you to lie idle and soak up the sun. History of Kovalam:
Kovalam, literally means a grove of coconut trees. The Europeans who frequented the courts of the Travancore rulers discovered the beauty and serenity of this idyllic beach town. But Kovalam became really famous as a beach paradise in the early seventies when hippies from all parts of the world came down here to experience the natural beauty of this little town.
Special attractions in and around Kovalam:
- Vizhinjam Village: Houses the Vizhinjam Cave Temple with the figures of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati.
- Napier Museum: Houses a fine collection of Kerala's bronzes, ornaments and contumes, and a model of "Tharawad'-the traditional Nair family home.
- Kuthiramalika Palace Museum: A classic specimen of Kerala Architecture with exhibits representing the erstwhile state of Travancore.
- Padmanabhapuram Palace: Located 54 kms from Thiruvananthapuram, this 14th cenury palace houses relics of historical and artistic value.
- Kaudiar Palace: This palace is the home of the late Maharaja Sree Chitra Thirunal Bala Rama Varma and his family.
- Koyikkal Palace: Classified as a double storeyed ‘nalukettu’, Koyikkal Palace was the official residence of the of the rulers of the erstwhile State of Travancore. Located 18 km from Thiruvananthapuram.
- Veli Tourist Village: A waterfront park where the lake merges with sea.
