Malpe Beach is about 6 kilometres away from Udupi. A virgin beach, Malpe boasts of clear blue skies, many palm trees and an uninterrupted view of the calm seas. The lovely bit about this beach is that one can go swimming, fishing or boating here; all the ingredients for a great holiday!
Malpe is a naturally formed harbour and an important fishing centre. The harbour is rather sheltered and remains a popular picnic spot for the locals and tourists alike. There are numerous places of interest around the beach as well. One can hitch a boat ride to St.Mary’s island which is another popular picnic spot. There are also numerous temples like the Balarama Temple around here. Malpe also boasts of one of the oldest tile factories, started by the Basel Mission years ago.
History of Malpe:
Malpe beach has always been associated with the temple town of Udupi. Legend has it that the idol of Lord Sri Krishna in Udupi was found by Sri Madhwacharya at the Malpe Beach. Being a natural harbour, it has also served as a major port for fishing over the centuries.

- St.Mary’s Island: Anyone who visits the Malpe Beach has to hitch a boat ride to this island. It is a nice little island with a lot of rock formations.
- Udupi: This is a temple town, famous for the Sri Krishna Temple and the Ashta Mutts of the Madhwa Community.
- Balarama Temple: The ancient temple of Balarama on the beach.
- Mangalore: A sea side town famous for its beaches and educational institutions.
- Ullal: Another beach town famous for its Causurina groves.

The weather is pleasant and balmy except for the monsoon season, when it rains heavily.

Best time to visit: The period from January to July is the best seasons to visit Malpe. The rest of the months include the rainy season with little respite as is common in the Western Ghats.
