Chenda is a rhythmic instrument very popular in South India in the states of Kerala and Karnataka. Most of the time, it is used to give accompaniment to religious arts. It is also used for the accompaniment to the various classical dances of South India like Kathakali, Yakshagana and Koodiyattam.
Chenda is played by hanging it on the neck with the help of rope. The rope is made up of clothes. It needs two sticks to strike from the top and sounds very healthy.
Chenda is cylindrical in shape. It has double sided skin. There are three types of Chenda:
- Veekku Chenda
- Acchan Chenda
- Uruttu Chenda

Chenda originated in South India as an accompanying instrument for the religious dances of the Kerala and Karnataka. It is traditionally used in temples, religious activities, rituals, etc. It is believed that Chenda is very lucky instrument.
