Cheruthuruthy is a quaint village located in the Thrissur District in the state of Kerala. It is a popular tourist destination and is widely recognized for its social and cultural richness. Cheruthuruthy is also rich in its classical forms of dances which were patronized by landlords and kings in the past.

Cheruthuruthy is also famous for its Kalamandalam, which was heralded as Kerala's first institution to provide training in classical performing arts. The introduction of Kalamandalam gave rebirth to the two classical forms of dancing, Mohiniyattam, and Kathakali, which were slowly loosing importance. Cheruthuruthy is most known for its rich cultural heritage and high values in classical dance forms.

History of Cheruthuruthy
The history of Cheruthuruthy is associated with the classical dance forms and the place is mainly recognized for promoting the culture and reviving the lost forms of major classical dance styles. Back in the nineteenth century, when the traditional forms of dancing were becoming extinct, Cheruthuruthy re ignited the flames of the classing form in the small village.
Many internationally recognized artists in classing dancing have been trained here and the village has contributed greatly in imparting dance training for over the past 78 years.

  • Koothambalam: This is a traditional dance theatre built outside a temple comples.
  • Kerala Kalamandalam: This is an important place which imparts training in classical forms of dancing. This institution has been recognized for its training in traditional dance forms like Thullal, Panchavadyam, Kootiyattam, Mohiniyattom and Kathakali.
