History of Ellora caves
The caves were built during the 7th Century under the rule of Chalukyan Dynasty. The Buddhist Chaityas and Viharas were constructed during the time. The caves also include a few Hindu and Jain caves of the same period. The region is also famous for its antiquity. It has been inhabited since time immemorial, the stone tools belonging to the Upper Paleolithic (around 10,000 to 20,000 years ago), and Mesolithic (less than 10,000 years ago) bearing testimony to this fact. The Heliolithic remains (2500-1000 BC) in the vicinity also indicates the continuity of human occupation in this region.
