The magnificence of the spectacular and historical place fort Shivneri is unrivalled since ages. Shivneri holds the prestige and pride of being the motherland of Chattrapathi Shivaji, the great warrior and founder of the Marathas.
The tales of Shivaji are very inspirational and impulsive. The Shivneri fort is a stupendous example of the ancient medieval architecture and remarks the greatness of the skills of the workmen of the time. The fort entrance seems to touch the sky. Climbing the fort requires special strength and spirit, as it gets tougher as we proceed through the hilly woods.
While on your way to the fortress, there is a small and a beautiful temple, dedicated to the Goddess Shivani, who is considered to answer all the prayers of her devotees. The architecture of the fort is notable and praise-worthy; especially the seven massive gates attract the visitor’s attention leaving them awestruck.
History of Shivneri
The fort played a watch-dog role during the period of Marathas. The purpose of building the fort was to safeguard Jijabai from during the delicate times of her life. The fortification was built by Shahaji Bhonsale, in order to provide safe resting place for the queen during constant warfare. It is the place where the legend of Maratha was born.
Special attractions in and around Shivneri
- Lenyadri caves-Situated at a distance of 2 km from the fort, the caves are a source of information about the rule of Maratha and their administration. The caves houses one of the Ashtavinayaka temple.
- Badami Talav- this pond can be spotted in the middle of the fort. The impressive standing image of Jijabai and Shivaji is very famous here.
- Nane Ghat- The elevated plateau, is a photographer’s paradise, and once here you can have an overview of the Konkan plateau
- Other interesting places near Shivneri include Dongarmatha, Kaman Take and Kadeloot Tok.
