Vazhachal Water Falls Print E-mail

Vazhachal is a gushing waterfall that cascades down to join the Chalakudy river in Kerala. It is located in the Thrissur district, just 3 km away from Athirapilly, another magnificent waterfall that flows along the western ghats. The road leading to Vazhachal from Athirapilly is surrounded by dense forests and affords a breath-taking view.

A feast for the eyes and a balm for the soul, that’s the magic of the Vazhachal Falls. The Vazhachal Falls is set in a scenic backdrop of dense greenery with the pristine, white water flowing down the hill tops like a silvery cascade. The babbling sound of water as it flows into the Chalakudy river is soothing to the ear. The place is less crowded than Athirapilly and you can just spend hours gazing at the wondrous beauty of nature, amidst this scenic splendor. Located high in the Sholayar forest ranges, near thick vegetation, Vazhachal is home to several rare species of wildlife. But it would really be your lucky day if you manage to catch sight of a deer or any other animal as they remain hidden beneath the canopy of the dense jungles that surround the waterfalls. The river originates as a gentle stream in the higher ranges of the mountains but gains momentum as it gushes through huge boulders and flows down heavy rocky patches at Vazhachal. Vazhachal is a great picnic spot where you can spend time with family and friends in a quiet picturesque setting, far away from the fast-paced world. The Vazhachal falls is an awe-inspiring spectacle, indeed!

The River’s Course:
The Chalakudy river which flows through the Vazhachal Forest Division which has 5 territorial ranges - Athirapilly, Charpa, Vazhachal, Kollathirumedu and Sholayar. The river which runs its course smoothly in the higher ranges of the mountains, turns furious near the Ittyani rock and gushes down huge rocks in Vazhachal and Athirapilly. The river is blocked by a dam down below at Imburmuzhi and the water is used to irrigate nearby agricultural lands.
