History of Bhimtal
Bhimtal, the word, comes from Bhima in Mahabharata. The city also has a very old Shiva temple, Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple, which was built during the time of Bhima. The temple is thought to be one of the oldest and most spiritual temples in this city.. Bhimtal has also been a stoppage for travellers who traverse the hills to the plains and nearby places over a long period of time. A pedestrian road was specially built for this which remainsin use, till date. It connects some major areas which include Kathgodam, Nepal and Tibet. It is debated that this road played a major role in the ancient and famous silk route history.
Special Attractions in Bhimtal
The major attractions in Bhimtal include the Bhimtal Lake which boasts of an island which offers a great view of the lake around. The Garg Parvat, one of the mountain peaks in the area, is located near the Bhimtal Temple. It is believed that Gargi started from this very place. For the superstitious, there's a small lake called Nal Damyanti Tal near Bhimtal, where King Nala supposedly drowned and since then, has been a sacred place for all. Hidimba Parvat, is another place where people go touring during their visit to Bhimtal. The name is derived from the demon Hidimba, of Mahabharata fame, The peak is alsoa sanctuary for wild animals, known as the Vankhandi Ashram.
Best Time to Visit Bhimtal
Although Bhimtal has lovely weather conditions all year around, the city is at its best from April to July and September to November. The former is summertime when the climate is mild and the lake-side pleasant. During the latter months, it is monsoon at Bhimtal, which affords you a slightly cooler weather palette.
