Gulmarg, the nature’s paradise lies in the Baramula district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located approximately 2730 metres above sea level and is a popular tourist destination. People from all over the world visit here to participate in winter sports like skiing, trekking and sledging, etc. It also boasts of the highest golf course in the world.

This beautiful town is surrounded by dense coniferous forests and snow-clad mountain peaks. It derives its name from the term “Meadow of Flowers”, based on the lush green slopes around it, dotted with flowers.

Gulmarg serves as a tourist spot throughout the year. In the summer, it is like a haven for people who wish to get away from the scorching heat and in the winters, Gulmarg offers winter sports, which attracts a large number of tourists. Blessed with natural beauty and pleasant climate, Gulmarg has become the heart of the state, offering many recreational activities ranging from pony rides to snow-bobbing.

History of Gulmarg
The name of the city, “Gulmarg”, originated from the term ‘Gaurimarg’, which was the name given to this place by local shepherds. Its present day name was given by Sultan Yusuf Shah in the 16th century because of the abundance of flowers on its mountain slopes. Gulmarg means ‘meadow of flowers’ and the place has lived up to its name to date. In 1927, this hill resort was discovered by the British and has since then, witnessed quite a few historical events. After militancy attacks in 1990s, the place has become a peaceful and prosperous town, attracting visitors from throughout the world.

Special attractions in and around Gulmarg
Gulmarg is situated at a high attitude and offers various recreational and sports activities for people visiting here. One can enjoy pony rides and walk around the mountains enjoying the beautiful surroundings. People can also enjoy rides in the Gondola Cable Cars, which offer an amazing view of the mountains or go trekking on the smaller peaks or indulge in snow sports like skiing and the likes. Apart from this, the city also boasts of the highest golf course in the world. Gulmarg is a beautiful place and a lot of fun-filled and thrilling activities make it an interesting destination.

The best season to visit the city is from April to June.

Climatic Conditions
Gulmarg experiences a pleasant climate throughout the year, though the winters can be quite cold.

Clothing
Light woollen clothing in summer and heavy woollens are recommended in winters.

  •  Gulmarg Golf Courses: Gulmarg has the highest golf course in the world. Situated at an altitude of 2650 meters, Gulmarg still holds a well-maintained and excellent golf course. One can hire equipment here and enjoy the thrill of the game on the highest ever golf-course.
