Lakkidi, also known as the ‘Gateway of Wayanad’, is a popular hill station in the state of Kerala. It is amongst the highest locations in the state and is also known to have registered the second highest rainfall degree in the world. The place has beautiful streams, dense forests and lofty peaks, which add to its beauty and makes it a place worth visiting.

Lakkidi is the house to many beautiful springs and waterfalls. Apart from these several temples and trekking centers are located in this region. Caves, temples and dense forests make this place an interesting region. The wild life sanctuary and the adventurous sports, along with other recreational activities for the tourists attract many visitors to Lakkidi.

History of Lakkidi
The hill town of Lakkidi is the birthplace of the famous poet from Kerala; Kunjan Nambiar. As per history, Kunjan Nambiar, the popular poet followed the tenets of Natya Shastra, a Treatise on Dance compiled in 2nd century B.C. He used to perform in the Chakkiaars, groups of Drummers and he fused his style, Thallu with images and themes from Mahabharata and Ramayana in a way unique to Keralese Art forms. The peculiar note of his fusion art form is to take up cudgels against the social injustices and discrimination prevailing in the society. Special attractions in and around Lakkidi

  • Ananthaswami Jain temple: This is a famous temple of the Jains and is located at Paliyar Mala
  • Vythiri: This is a beautiful resort town and is located at a distance of 62 kilometers from Kozhikode.
  • Suchipara Falls: These falls are located at a distance of 22 kilometers from Kalpetta, amidst dense forests.
  • Meenmutty Falls: These falls are located at a distance of 29 kilometers from Kalpetta.
  • Pookote Lake: This place is located around a kilometer away from Vythiri and is a great place for kayaking and boating.
  • Chembra Peak: This 6890 feet peak is the tallest peak of the whole area and is great for trekking.
  • Sultan Battery: It was previously known as Ganapathivattom; and it is believed that during the 13th century, it was here in this Jain Temple that Tipu Sultan stored his ammunition.
  • Edakkal Caves: These caves represent the carvings of Mesolithic Age and Neolithic Age.
  • Lower Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary: This wild life sanctuary is located around 17 kilometers from the town and is home to many animals like Cheetal, Sambhar, Leopards, Deer and Elephants.
  • Ambalavayal: This is a heritage museum in Wayanad and is associated with with tribal life.

Clothing
Light cotton clothes in the summers and light woolen clothes in the winters are recommended. One should also carry appropriate clothing for the rains.

Tourist attractions near Lakkidi

  • Pakshipathalam: This is a popular trekking center located around 7 kilometers from the Thirunelli temple.
  • Thirunelli Temple: Thirunelli is a beautiful spot and a houses the popular Thirunelli temple in its forest area. This temple is also referred to as 'Thekkan Kasi'.
  • Pazhassi Tourist Resort: This is a popular tourist resort in the northern Wayanad region. It has many facilities and entertainment activities for the tourist visiting here.
  • Sentinel Rock Water Fall: This waterfall is located at Vellarimala village and is a trekking centre as well as a picnic spot.
  • Chembra Peak: This is the highest hill in Wayanad and is a great trekking spot.
