Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is located in Kerala, the southernmost state of India. The place is well known for sheltering rich variety of plants and animal species. Some of these species fall in the category of endangered species. The place offers beautiful landscapes and is visited by a number of tourists every year.

Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is one of the most visited locations of Kerala. The place provides an opportunity to witness the existence of magnificent species of plants and animals. Apart from this, it is an ideal place for trekking, which is facilitated by suitable climatic conditions.

The place happens to be the home for giant grizzled squirrel, which is amongst the endangered species of wildlife in India. Apart from this, there are other animal species like tigers, spotted dears, elephants, cobras, black eagles, sambhars, white bison, turtles and vipers.

Also, the place offers a prosperous variety of plants, which include Albizia Lathamii, Acacia Arabica, Santalum Album, Elaeocarpus Recurvatus and many more.

History of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
Chinnar wildlife sanctuary attained its status in the year 1984. The sanctuary was allowed to extend its limit in the area of 90 sq km In the time period of two decades, this sanctuary has secured a place in the list of most admirable tourist locations of Kerala.

 


Best Time to Visit Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
The wildlife sanctuary welcomes tourists throughout the year from different corners of the world. However, the months of October and November are not suitable for visiting the place. The visiting hours for this sanctuary are 0700-1800 hrs.

Location
Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is located in the Idukki district of Kerala. To be more specific, it belongs to Devikulam Taluka of this district. Its distance from Munnar, which is an important tourist destination, is 60 km.

How to reach Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Chinnar wildlife sanctuary could be visited by air or by train. In order to travel by air, one has to visit Cochin International Airport. The sanctuary is located at the distance of 200 km from this airport. One may also visit this sanctuary from Coimbatore airport.
  • One may also reach this place by train. The near by railway stations include Ernakulam, Aluva and Pollachi.
  • Also, the place is well-connected with major cities through roads.

Climatic Conditions
The place lies in the rain shadow area of Western Ghats and thus receives rainfall for limited number of days in a year. Thus, the climatic conditions provide good opportunity for the tourists to enjoy trekking.
