Desert National Park Print E-mail

The Desert National Park is situated in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, near the town of Jaisalmer. It has been declared as a protected sanctuary under the Indian Wildlife Act. It is one of the largest national parks in India; spread in an area of 3162 sq km. around twenty percent of the whole area is covered by massive sand dunes.

In spite of the fragile eco-system, there is certainly no dearth of the bird life in the area. The Great Indian Bustard, now an endangered species, is found in abundance in the area. The park is visited by various migratory and resident birds of the desert.

There is plenty of animal life as well in the park, consisting mainly of chinkara, desert cat, desert fox, birds like eagles, harriers, vultures, sand grouses, buzzards’ owls etc. You can also come across the reptiles such as monitor lizard; saw scaled viper, and spiny tailed lizard in the park. It is really a marvel of the nature, as to how such a large variety of flora and fauna can survive in such harsh in-habitable conditions of the desert.

Special attractions in and around Desert National Park
The excursion tour to Jaisalmer is incomplete without a visit to the Desert National Park. The major source of water to the flora and fauna of the park are the three lakes in the sanctuary: The Rajbaugh Lake, The Milak Talao Lake and The Padam Talao Lake. The park is rich in flora too, in spite of the harsh desert like conditions prevailing in the area.  The species found in this area include dhok, ronj, salai and palm trees. So if you are a nature buff, or interested in ornithology, the park is the right place for bird watching, where you'll find a bewildering variety of local as well as migratory birds.
