The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is said to be the one and only home of the pure Asiatic Lion. The national park itself, which is a fully protected area, measures around 258 square kilometres while the sanctuary is 1154 square kilometres in totality. Gir National Park and Sanctuary is considered the most important of its kind in Asia due to its protected species of animals. It is located in the district of Junagadh State of Gujarat.

The eco system of the area is one of the best in terms of animal protection. The flora and fauna of the park is diverse and now, abundant because of the ecological systems.
 The protection of the pure Asiatic Lion started in the 1900 by the then Nawab of Junagadh.

History of the Gir National Park
The actual establishment of the park was in 1965 with a total area of 1,412 square kilometres. The protection of its lion inhabitants and other animals, however, started as early as 1900, when the Nawab of the state of Junagadh, became concerned about the dying out of the only pure Asiatic Lion of its kind in the world. He then ordered the protection of all animals in and around the area. Not only were the Asiatic Lions protected but the order of Nawab included the fortification of all the flora and fauna of the place. This resulted was that the Asiatic Lions grew in number and continued to live securely until the actual establishment of the Gir National Park in 1965.

Special attraction in Gir National Park
The major attraction, of course, is the one of its kind, Pure Asiatic Lion. Aside from this,   around 300 kinds or species of birds also live here in different colours, forms and sizes. The park also has a total of 37 species of reptiles roaming the entirety of the park. One will also find different kinds of hyenas, jackals, mongoose, desert cats, antelopes and many more wild animals here.

Best Time to Visit Gir National Park and Clothing to Wear
The best time to visit Gir National Park range from the months of September to March. Due to temperate climate, light cotton clothing is recommended with insect repellents.

How to Reach Gir National Park
Gir National Park has 3 routes of travel and all pass through the district of Sasan. One can go to Sasan by way of Diu or via Porbander or even through Rajkot. These three districts, Diu, Porbander and Rajkot, are all also connected to Mumbai by air. From Mumbai, one needs to land at either of the above mentioned airports and then proceed to Gir National Park by road.
