Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary Print E-mail

The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Southern Kerala’s Western Ghats. The sanctuary is spread over a sprawling area of more than 75 km. This unique wildlife park embraces parts of Udumpanchola and also Thodupuzha districts in Kerala. Some of the wild animals that can be seen in Idukki wildlife sanctuary are jungle cat, wild elephants, wild dogs, bears, bisons, wild boars and deer.

Idukki wildlife sanctuary can be located at an altitude of 500 to 700m above sea-level. It lies nestled between Cheruthoni and Pervar River. This beautiful and scenic sanctuary comprises of many picturesque lakes and enchanting tropical trees. If you are lucky enough to visit the place, then you may also encounter ferocious tigers, leopard, dangerous snakes such as King Cobra, Russel’s Viper and Kraits. Birds like myna, thrush, peafowl, woodpecker, jungle fowl, bulbul and kingfisher add color and variety to the sanctuary.

History of Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary was built in the year 1976. Since then, it has been a hot tourist destination with dense forestation, lush greenery and a natural ambience for numerous wild animals that dwell here.

  • The sanctuary lies in close proximity to Idukki Arch Dam.
  • There is a beautiful lake on all 3 sides of the wildlife sanctuary, which adds to the pristine glory of the place. The all round panoramic view is breath taking and mesmerizing.
  • There is also a man-made artificial lake in Kizhkkilachimala that adds to the splendor of the sanctuary.
  • The sanctuary consists of dense forest areas with abundant tropical evergreen vegetation and trees such as Pali, Rosewood, White Pine, Bhadraksham and lovely meadows full of tall grasses.

Best Time to Visit and Clothing to Wear
The best time for a fun visit to the adventurous Idukki Sanctuary is from early December to April end. There is no dress code, but it is preferable to wear western outfits like pants, trousers, jeans, shirts, pullovers and caps for the adventurous journey.

How to Reach Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Idukki wildlife sanctuary can be located at an altitude of 500 to 700m above sea-level. It lies nestled between Cheruthoni and Pervar River. You may reach this enchanting place by road or air. The nearest airport is at Kochi and Madurai. You may choose to travel by roadways via Ooty, Munnar and Kodiakannal.
