History of Kabini Sanctuary
This Sanctuary was earlier the hunting grounds for the Maharaja’s of Mysore and has been now converted into a sanctuary for wildlife. It is located on the banks of River Kabini and near the Karapur Forest Range. Close by are other sanctuaries like the Nagarahole Wildlife Sanctuary. Kabini Sanctuary was the place where the erstwhile Maharaja’s used to conduct Khedda Operations to capture Elephants and tame them so that they can be used in their armies. However post-independence saw the forest department conducting a few khedda operations to capture elephants. This practice has been abandoned now.
