Set up in 1959, National Zoological Park is considered to be one of the best zoological parks in Asia. The park has been specifically designed to provide a natural habitat to 2,000 species of birds and animals. It also serves as an excellent picnic spot.
Special Attractions in and around National Zoological Park
Designed by Carl Hagenbeck of Germany and Major Weinman of Sir Lanka, National Zoological Park covers a massive area of 214 acres. It provides a natural habitat to approximately 2,000 species of animals including 810 species of birds, 542 species of reptiles and 34 species of mammals. Additionally, there are more than 200 species of plants like Bistendu, Lahura and Alamtas hedges.
In addition to animals and plants, the National Zoological Park also houses 17th century Kos Minar, built by Akbar’s son Jahangir. There is a well-equipped library in the park where visitors can get interesting facts and information about Indian fauna. During winters the park transforms into an idyllic picnic spot. Open-roof mobile vans are available for traversing through the park.
Timings
National Zoological Park remain opens on all days of the week, except Fridays, between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM in summers and 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM in winters.
