Chamoli is the hill district in the state of Uttaranchal. This place is famous from the period when the Chipko movement took place i.e. during the 1970s and 1980s. It is said to be the most stunning place owing to its natural views and assets. This place is mostly visited by the nature lovers and pilgrims. This wonderful destination is famous for its scenery, valley aspects, water-edges, floristic varieties and for its spectacular landform.
Located at an altitude of 926 meters, Chamoli was earlier a part of Pauri Garhwal. But in the year 1960, it was re-established by its headquarters Gopeshwar. Chamoli is mentioned in the Taleshwar Copper Plate Grant which was brought by the Katyuri Dynasty and was established by them in the 3rd century after the Gupta Dynasty to 14th century. One of the Copper Plates explored that the ancient capital of Brahmapura had one of its administrative centres at Chamoli.
This place is said to be having its origin and association with Lord Hanuman. It is the same place from where Hanumanji found the herbs called Sanjeevani for giving life to Laxman. It is also said that Chamoli is the place, where Ved Vyas composed his immortal epic, “Mahabharata”. Chamoli is also famous for inspiring great poets. Kalidas is one of them.
This place is said to add extra charm to the Himalayan land and is believed to be one of the favourites of Lord Shiva. There are numerous temples which are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Chamoli is the city which is untouched by the urban life as yet. This place is having the shrine of Lord Shiva called ‘Badrinath’.

There is not much of accommodation facility at Chamoli. You can either put up at P.W.D. Inspection House, Forest Rest House, Nim Rest House or can make some self arrangements.
Attractions of Chamoli
- Satopanth Lake in Chamoli: This is a lake having water of about half a kilometre. It is said that this place is occupied by the trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.
- Narad Kund: Here, the idol of Badrinath was recovered from the river near Tapt Kund.
- Bedni Bugyal: This is a camping spot with mules, horses and sheep. There are two temples located at this place with a small lake which gives an outstanding look to the place.
- Vasudhara: This is a magnificent water fall and beautiful spot for the visitors.
Another location to visit is the Shiv temple. The attractions in this place also include the fair and festivals.

The summer at this place is said to be pleasant and the winter are normally chilling. Hence, it is good to visit Chamoli during the summers. However, this place can also be visited round the year as winters are bearable.
How to Reach Chamoli
By air: The nearest airport for Chamoli is Jolly Grant which is at a distance of 34 km.
By rail: The nearest rail head is Rishikesh, which is at a distance of 202 km. Apart from this, there are trains available for all major nearby cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow etc.
By road: This place is well connected by road with daily buses made available by the UP State Transport Corporation. These buses run from Rishikesh to Badrinath. Apart from this, you can also reach the place through some jeeps and other private vehicles.

Chamoli is surrounded by various other tourist destinations. Some of the most famous ones are:
- Hemkund Sahi: This is considered to be a holy shrine for the Sikhs as the 10the Guru of Sikhs, Shri Guru Govind Singh, meditated at the banks of this lake located at a height and introduced the ‘Khalsa’.
- Nandaprayag: It is a formation of the confluence of river Mandakini and Alaknanda. It is considered to be holiest place carrying river water of Ganga.
- Adibadri: This is a group of around 16 temples located at a distance of 16 km from the famous Karnaprayag. This pyramid shaped temple was sanctioned by Shri Adi Shankaracharya.
- Rudranath Temple: Situated at a height of 2286 metres, this temple is one of the famous five Kedarnath temples. The way to temple it little tricky and consist of trekking. This remple provides sight of Nanda Devi, Hathi Parvat, Nanda Parvat.
