History of Jammu
The history of Jammu roots back to the ancient times, when the Suryavanshi King, Jambu Lochan discovered the natural enemies, a tiger and a deer drinking water from the same tank. It stated that the place had a virtuous origin and spread signs of love, peace and friendliness. He was so impressed with this scene, that he made the region, the capital to his territory. The history of this place can also be traced back to the medieval times during the eighteenth century, when the famous Mahakali temple was built in the Bahu fort, which also houses the palace of the ruler.
Special attractions in and around Jammu
- Raghunath Temple: The construction of the temple was started in 1835 by Maharaja Gulab Singh, but his son completed the construction in 1857. The temple is situated in the heart of the city and is amongst the largest temples in the region.
- Dargah of Ali Shah: This is a Holy shrine of the Muslims and it is believed that it keeps away the bad spirits away from the city.
- Other attractions in the city include the local shopping and tourist centers. The local parks offer a unique sense amidst the blend of cultures

Tourist attractions near Jammu
- Vaishno Devi Temple: It is amongst the most important Hindu shrines and an important pilgrimage center. Several hundred devotees visit here every year.
- Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary: This wildlife sanctuary is well known for the availability of pheasant. Other prominent species which exist here are chakor, chir pheasants, red jungle fowl, peafowl, blue rock pigeon and Indian mynah. You will also find the grey langur, rhesus monkey, wild boar and leopards in the sanctuary.
- Mansar Lake: This beautiful lake is located around sixty kilometers from Jammu. It holds religious importance as well and is visited by many devotees.
- Bahu Fort: This fort cum temple is located on the bank of River Tawi, around five kilometers away from the Jammu town. It was originally built around 3000 years back, but was renovated later by the Dogra rulers. It houses ancient temples and beautiful gardens in the premises.
- Peer Kho Cave: These Holy caves situated on the bank of River Tawi house temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
