Jogeshwar belongs to the group of 12 Jyotirlings of India and is a proud owner of more than 120 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The place is visited by devotes of Lord Shiva every year, especially in the month of February and March.

Jogeshwar is the place, famous for two most significant reasons. The place is considered as one of the most sacred places devoted to Lord Shiva and at the same time, it impresses the tourists with its natural beauty. The place provides shelter to deciduous forests and rivers like Nandini and Surabhi. The place is located at the height of 1,870 meter and offers a peaceful environment.

History of Jogeshwar
The temples of this place are believed to be constructed in era lying between Gupta Dynasty and Medieval period. The time period between 8th and 18th centuries are considered as construction of more than 120 temples at this place. There are many royal names in the history, which are considered as devotes of these temples. Few of these names include Katyuri King Shalivahandev and Chand Kings. It is also believed that queens of these kings followed the tradition of Sati at this place.

Attractions of Jogeshwar

  • The place is famous for 124 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a marvelous experience to watch the architecture of these temples. The principal temple of Jageshwar is famous for its dwarapalas and akhand jyoti.
  • Dandeshwar temple, Mokshyadham temple, Koteshwar temple, Sri Mahamritunjaya temple and Jhanker Saim temple are amongst most popular temples of this place.
  • Other places of interest include Jata Ganga, Brahma Kund, Sri Kuber Temple, Airavat Gufa and Batuk Bhairav Temple.

Location
Jogeshwar is located at Artola village in the Kumaun region of uttaranchal. It is lapped in the Jataganga valley and surrounded by great deciduous forests. The nearest town is Almora and nearest city is Nainital.

Best Time to Visit
You may visit this temple round the year. However, you are suggested to visit Jogeshwar at the time of Shivratri, the festival celebrated in the honor of Lord Shiva. Thus, you may visit this place in the months of February and March to participate in the big festival fair.

Climatic Conditions
The place is known to offer a pleasant climate in all the months of the year. You can enjoy pleasant weather in summers and cold weather in the winter season.

Clothing
It depends upon the months in which you are visiting Jogeshwar. In the months falling in summer season, you may take light cotton clothes. However, in the winter season, you are required to pack woolen clothes.

How to Reach Jogeshwar
You may reach Jogeshwar by following the below mentioned modes:

  • Kathgodam, at the distance of 128 km, serves as the nearest railway station to Jogeshwar. From here, you can hire jeeps and taxis to reach the destination.
  • You may reach Jogeshwar by means of well-connected roads to Almora (38 km), Haldwani (120 km) and Pithoragarh (88 km).
  • Pantnagar is the nearest airport to Almora at a distance of 127 km.

Tourist Attractions near Jogeshwar

  • Vriddha Jageshwar is a small temple at the distance of 3 km from Jogeshwar and is famous as abode of Shiva.
  • The temple of Golu Devta at Chitai is also a place of religious importance.
  • The famous hill station of Almora is at the distance of 38 km and is famous for its scenic beauty and Nanda Devi temple.
  • Mritola Ashram is a peaceful place for disciples from different parts of the world.
