Joshimath is one of the finest hilly areas in Uttaranchal. Apart from offering scenic beauty of snow-covered mountains, green forests and beautiful rivers, the place also is also know for its religious importance.

Joshimath is the hilly town of Chamoli district and enjoys the status of being an important pilgrim destination. The town is also known as Jyotirmath and is famous as one of the four ‘maths’ of the country. The place is visited by tourists all over the year with intentions of spiritual traveling as well as participating in trekking adventures and ice skiing.
 
History of Joshimath
It was in 8th century AD that Adi Guru Shri Shankaracharya established one of the four ‘maths’ in the form of Jyotirmath. Since then, the place has been bestwed upon with a large number of beautiful temples.

Attractions of Joshimath

  • Narasimhadeva Temple, which is more than 1200 years old temple dedicated to fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, known as Narasimha.
  • Vasudeva Temple is another beautiful temple located at the distance of 30 m from Narasimhadeva Temple. It houses a 6 feet high idol of Lord Vasudeva.
  • Sankaracharya Math is known as the meditation spot of Adi Guru Shri Shankaracharya. It is famous for Kalpavriksa tree, which is believed to be 2400 years old.
  • There are other temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Hanuman, Ganesha, Surya, Gaurishankar and Naudevi.

Location
Joshimath is located in the Chamoli district of Garhwal division in the state of Uttaranchal. It is situated at a height of 6,000 feet and near the famous rivers like Alaknanda and Dhauliganga.

Best Time To Visit
Joshimath, being a place with religious importance, is visited for all the months of the year. However, it is suggested to visit between the months of July and October.

Clothing
It is recommended to bring woolen clothes on your trip to Joshimath. Due to nearness to rivers and presence of mountains, you must take gloves, caps, mufflers, jackets and boots, along with other winter clothes.

Climatic Conditions
Joshimath is flanked by cold weather. This is the reason; it is considered as a wonderful spot for trekking as well as ice skiing.

How To Reach Joshimath

  • It is possible to reach Joshimath by road, as it is well-connected to towns like Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Nanital and Almora.
  • You may also land upon nearest airport at Jollygrant, from where you can avail further transport facilities.
  • You may also visit Rishikesh railway station and take the road to Joshimath.

Joshimath is surrounded by a number of tourist attractions like:

  • Badrinath, Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, which are places of religious importance.
  • Valley of flowers, a place offering rich variety of flowers.
  • Auli, which is known for ice skiing winter sports.
  • Nanda Devi National Park, located at a distance of 23 km from Joshimath.
