Karnaprayag is situated at the confluence of the Alaknanda River and Pindar River. This place is one of the five sites where the confluence of river occurs. This is one of the holy places of the Hindu pilgrimage. It represents the mythological legendary details and truth of Mahabharata.
Karnaprayag is a city and a municipal board located in Chamoli district in the state of Uttaranchal in India.
Karnaprayag is considered to be the most holy and pious place in the history of Hindu pilgrimage. It is the place hosting the ‘sangam’ or merger of three most sacred rivers in India i.e. Ganga, Yamuna nd Saraswati. Karnaprayag also maintains its holiness due to the ancient and age old temple of Goddess Uma Devi (Parvati). There are many other temples dedicated to the Goddess, but the temple ‘Uma Devi’ is the foremost. It is located at a distance of 31 km from Rudraprayag. This place also serves as a commencement point for different treks moving towards Pindari Glacier and Roopkund.
History of Karnaprayag
Karnaprayag is associated with the history of ‘Mahabharata’. It is believed that at Karnaprayag, Karan, the hero of Mahabharata, used to worship the Saturn or the sun god. He used to meditate here for many years to acquire the impregnable shield, which made him formidable warrior in the field of battle. This is the place where Lord Surya bestowed Karan with ‘Kavacha’ and ‘Kundala’. This place is also known for the meditation of Swami Vivekananda who meditated here for 18 years with his Guru Bhai, Guru Turianand ji and Akharanand ji.

This place is mostly known for its beautiful spiritual attractions and the various famous temples of which one is of goddess Uma Devi. The temple of goddess Uma Devi is venerated by the sadhus, monks and by the tantriks and pilgrims. The Hindus have a belief that this temple always fulfills the wish of the devotees within no time. This belief is associated with the word called Kaam Dhenu (a mythical wish fulfilling cow). There are many other temples hosted by Karnaprayag like KaalBhairov temple dedicated to Lord Kaleshwar in the north, Jaleshwar temple in the south and Chandika temple and Narayan temple in the east.
